Bob McKillop Davidson Wildcats Back Door / Staggered Screen Set Play Vs. VCU
Bob McKillop has done a great job in his 26 seasons for the Davidson Wildcats. He has been the coach of the year in the Southern Conference 7 times, has won 13 conference titles, has been to the national tournament 7 times, and has gone to the second round of the tournament 3 out of the last 4 years. He earned the NABC Coach of the Year award in 2008 after he and Steph Curry led the Davidson Wildcats to a run to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament.
He runs a really good motion offense and has several tough sets with multiple options. This is a play that they ran against VCU that has a back door option and a staggered screen option. VCU did a good job of guarding the backdoor look, and was able to make Davidson Wildcats miss the three, but it’s easy to see the promise in this set.
It starts out as a 4 out 1 in look, with the big at the high post. The backside guard cuts to the back side wing. The ball side wing cuts to the weak side guard spot. The weak side wing then goes to the ball side wing.
The point dribbles middle then spins back toward the wing. The wing sets up the back cut by coming to the ball as if he is going to receive the pass before back-cutting to the basket.
If the backdoor isn’t there, the big in the middle and the weak side guard set a staggered screen for the wing in the corner for the three.
