Bob Knight 2012 Nike Las Vegas Clinic Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Coaching the little things

Concentration by all players is the toughest thing to accomplish in coaching. Start practice with drills that aid in concentration development

Drills to aid concentration building | Bob Knight 2012 Nike Las Vegas Clinic Notes
1. Call practice time outs
a.Give them three things to do or know
b. Test what the remember
c. Develop for in game scenarios

2. 4 corner passing (pass, return, handoff, go inside then outside)
a. Call out first names (forces communication)
b. Quick changes (inside to outside handoffs or clockwise to counter-clockwise)
c. Focus on concentration and reaction

‘My fault’ ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘my bad’ are useless phrases, we know you screwed up FIX IT

Coach Knights philosophy on offensive development | Bob Knight 2012 Nike Las Vegas Clinic Notes

1. Every shooter should be paired with a rebounder
2. Shooter must practice game shots with game effort
3. Shooters should step in with their shooting foot
4 Practice by limiting one team 5-4 or 4-3 or 3-2 (increase the need to play hard)
5. Score by passing screening and cutting (screen away from the ball to score

put pressure on shooters

Improving Transition | Bob Knight 2012 Nike Las Vegas Clinic Notes
1. Use full court transition drills to make both teams work in the full court
2. Allow extended periods of scrimmage time to “Make the defense play some defense”
3. Keep offensive players 8 ft above the baseline (allows for middle and baseline drives)

Scrimmages in practice
1. Use Directed, dictated Scrimmage situations

Work transitioning O-D and D-O

5 man change drill
Rules:
Play set as normal, when “Change” is yelled possession changes on the same side of the court. Defense cannot guard who was guarding them (requires communication, and recognition of defensive lapses)

Zone Offensive thoughts | Bob Knight 2012 Nike Las Vegas Clinic Notes
1. The biggest weapon against the zone is the dribble
2. Attack Gaps in the zone with the dribble
3. Space and fill after drives
4. Never throw the ball back to the person you got it from (make the D rotate)
5. Never Dribble and pass in the same direction vs. the Zone
