West Virginia coach Bob Huggins helped the Mountaineers beat number five Notre Dame 83-71 in the second round of the NCAA basketball tournament yesterday. Press Virginia is different these days.
The number four seed which reached the Sweet 16 this year after losing to Stephen F. Austin in the first round last year. The West Virginia Mountainers are more than just a regular press these days. They delivered a knockout punch against the Fighting Irish yesterday. They jumped on them 10-0 and then forced ten turnovers in the first half and got twenty points in the paint. The Mountaineers pressed Notre Dame into fourteen turnovers in the game which is the same as the total in the 86-80 win against Bucknell.
West Virginia is getting great guard play against the Fighting Irish. They had seven different players with double figures in both of their last wins.
Coach Huggins has a pressing team, balanced scoring, and a team that is ready for the sweet sixteen.
Coach Huggins and his team are 10-4 since February, and the four losses were to NCAA Tournament teams. It’s the West Virginia Mountaineers four sweet sixteen in eight trips with Coach Huggins.
Coach Huggins and Press Virginia turned Notre Dame around. The Fighting Irish are second in the nation with assist-to-turnover ratio. Press Virginia made them frustrated, and they took shaky shots that they usually don’t take. It made their shot selection go haywire.
You can watch film and try to simulate the press for practice, but it’s not going to be the same. The Mountaineers have active hands, quick traps, and tempo on their side.
