Billy Donovan Florida Gators Cross Double Drag by Adam Spinella
Billy Donovan’s team is not as creative offensively as it has been in the past. Relying on a deep playbook (as always), the Gators are a very good offensive team because they execute so many different plays throughout the course of a game. One of the favorites this year has been an early offense set, a Double Drag screen.
A Double Drag screen (a staggered high ball screen) is nothing new, but adding ways to find movement before the ball screen is attacked doesn’t allow the hedge defender to get in position. As a result, the Gators get a lot of dribble penetration off this look and create quick offense – something they need.
As the point guard 1 dribbles up the left side (so he can come off the screen with his dominant hand), the wings cross on the baseline to create a sense that the play is not going to be dominated by the point guard. Trailer 4 then sets a cross screen at the nail hole for 5, who comes to set the first of the two ball screens. 1 waits patiently for 5 to arrive and for 4 to raise back to the three-point line. 1 then comes off and looks to penetrate, as 4 and 5 negotiate who will roll to the rim and who will stay high.
