Bill Self Open Practice: Zone Offenses

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Bill Self Open Practice: Zone Offenses

Here is a great set of zone offenses. In his “open practice” Kansas Jayhawks coach Self presents the plays his team implements to create scoring opportunities against 2-3 and 1-3-1 zone defenses.

The main idea lying under his zone offenses is to force four defenders to play three offensive players. The offensive players can then take advantage of the unbalance they impose to the defending team. Players find gaps within the defense allowing them to score around the rim or take a quick striking three-point shot. These may sound easy, but they are not. The most difficult part is how to implement them in practice, how to teach your players this kind of basketball. With coach Self’s demonstrating abilities this great DVD can really take you from hand and guide you through the Kansas University practice.

Like the slash offense. Great player movement. His attack vs 2-3 is a X type attack. Very solid and his press attack makes good sense vs zone pressure. As a coach Self comes across as very whiny. But obviously his method gets it done. This is a solid 5.

Some good idea’s to attack a 2-3 and 3-2 zone’s and different things to use. The 2-3 zone offense is easy to follow and the 3-2 is a little more complicated to follow. I like the Press Breaker Bill Self uses at the end of the video.

This is a great DVD to add to your collection if you are looking for a zone offense that attacks your opponent’s weaknesses and creates scoring opportunities around the rim.
