Be Great at few things or Ok at many?

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Be Great at few things or Ok at many?

I see a lot of coaches that throw so many new plays, wrinkles, or defenses at there team that there team is never great at one thing. I was guilty of this myself. Back when I was 20 and the head coach at Providence Middle School in Indiana I gave my team so many defenses that my players were never able to grasp the importance of one or the other. We started off the year running man to man and 2-3. After we lost a few games I decided to put in a pack 3-2 zone since we were smaller. This didn’t work so I thought lets try a trapping 1-3-1. By the end of the season we couldn’t even go man to man because we had gotten so far away from it. Looking back on this I wish I would have drilled our man to man principle and been great at them. If I needed to change anything, I could have just added a trap after half court, doubled the post, or anything simple like that. I learned from this experience that It is better to be great at a few things rather than OK at many things. Take pride in being great at those few things. Some of the best advice I have heard is, “if someone were to watch your practice, would they know what is important to you as a coach”. If someone were to watch my practices a few years ago then, they would have no idea what our teams identity was. Just like Coach Cal is known for dribble drive, Coach K is known for great man to man defense, and Coach Izzo is known for his great sets, they all excel at what they dobecause they do not try to be ok at everything. THEY ARE GREAT AT FEW THINGS!
