I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Basketball Coaching Notes – Bob Hurley: Building a Successful Program by Wes Kosel

Here are some basketball coaching notes from the great Bob Hurley. Coach Bob Hurley is the basketball coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. In his time at St. Anthony, he has led the Friars to 27 state championships and has sent over 150 of his players on to college programs with a basketball scholarship.

I can’t get enough of Bob Hurley. He is extremely charismatic and inspiring. Make sure to watch the documentary, “The Street Stops Here”, which goes behind the scenes of his 2007-2008 team who finished 32-0 as state champions. The team consisted of several players who would go on to play Division 1 basketball including: Dominic Cheek (Villanova), Jio Fontan (USC), Mike Rosario (Florida), Tyshawn Taylor (Kansas), and Travon Woodall ( Pittsburgh).

I also have read Adrian Wojnarowski’s book on St. Anthony’s 2003-2004 undefeated team, titled “The Miracle of St. Anthony”, and enjoyed the many great insights into the mind of Coach Hurley. I am currently reading Hurley’s latest book, “Chasing Perfect” and recommend both books for aspiring coaches.

Below are basketball coaching notes from Coach Hurley on building a successful program. He is a master of this, contending for the New Jersey state title every season. Hurley also does a great job of developing players in his program and encouraging them to play extremely hard. He has a toughness about him that rubs off on his teams.  You can learn so much from these basketball coaching notes.

Included in the notes are Hurley’s thoughts on:
• Coaching Philosophy
• Program Development
• Man to Man Defense, Press Offense, Transition Defense
• Strength & Conditioning
• Maintaining Intensity
• Developing Player Roles
• How to Scout Opponents
• And more!

I hope you enjoy these basketball coaching notes and can use them to help develop a successful program.
