Basketball Coaching | Learning to Run a Pressing Team from the VCU Rams | Shaka Smart Full Court Press

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

The basketball coaching community better be prepared if Illinois makes a run at Shaka Smart today.  I was told that they are in hot pursuit of the young upcoming VCU Coach that has had NCAA Tournament runs and a Final Four appearance.  Most people agree that his teams make big time defensive basketball plays all the time.  His X’s and O’s are going to be the question, but recruiting will be.

No one in the basketball coaching community wants to pull a “Dan Monson”.  He was the hot successful coach that got Gonzaga on the map and took the Minnesota job.  He didn’t get the job done and was fired.  Ben Howland stated in SI that most coaches only get three strikes on the college coaching ladder and the fourth one puts them out of the business.

Having recruited Chicago, I know that it is a tough place to recruit if you don’t have a Chicago guy on your staff.  It’s complicated, because of the player’s entourages, academic situations, and it’s tradition of being an open city that is recruited by schools near and far.  Illinois hasn’t been able to keep the top chicago kids annually for decades.

I think that you like this basketball coaching clinic presentation of Shaka Smart’s Full Court Press.  His teams always make defensive basketball plays when they need them. I hope that you enjoy.
