Barcelona Chicago Action by Chris Filios

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

One of my favorite basketball coaches in the world, Šarūnas “Saras” Jasikevičius has a new home. He left his native Kaunas, Lithuania, where he grew up and eventually became a player and then head coach of Zalgiris Kaunas Basketball Club. He has relocated to Barcelona, one of the biggest clubs in Europe, where he also played for 1 year.

One of his new favorite set plays is this “Chicago” action (I have also heard it recently called “Mash” Action): a pin down followed by a dribble handoff. Barcelona ran this set several times in a row to open the 4th quarter in the semifinal of the Supercopa against Real Madrid. They ran it for former NBA players, Nikola Mirotic and Alex Abrines. This is an unusual and tough action for the defensive big to guard as they are not used to having to cover this type of action.
