Back-Screen Plays
Attached in the back-screen playbook are three back-screen plays from several levels of basketball. The first play comes from Johnson & Wales, an NAIA institution out of Denver, CO. The Head Coach for J&W is Quintin Grogan. The second play is from the Reno Big Horns out of the NBA D-League. Lastly, the third play is from Arizona Wildcats Head Coach Sean Miller. Back-screen plays can be great for creating easy scoring looks near the rim. Many teams incorporate back-screens to get lay-ups or post-ups, but back-screens can also be utilized in lob plays as well.
Back-Screen Plays: 1-4 Push Back Screen
1 dribbles to the left pushing 3 into the lane to set a back-screen for 4 at the opposite elbow. 5 screens down for 2 who cuts to the top of the key for a shot. 1 first looks at 4 posting up then looks at 2 at the top of the key.
Back-Screen Plays: Back Screen Spread
1 passes to 4 who passes to 2. 3 runs across the floor from the right wing to the left corner. Once 2 has the ball, 5 sets a back-screen for 4 who cuts to the rim looking for a lob. If the lob isn’t there, 5 dribbles right as 1 makes a back-cut to the rim. 4 cuts out to the corner and can take a dribble hand-off from 5 if 1 isn’t open.
Back-Screen Plays: Back-Screen Play
This play was ran a few seasons ago by Sean Miller and his Arizona Wildcats. The play starts with 3 guards out and the posts at the block and elbow. Gordon and Tarczewski move to the left side of the lane as Ashley pops out and Johnson cuts to the block. Johnson then cuts to the wing and Gordon loops around Tarczewski. McConnell passes to Johnson then cuts off of a back-screen from Ashley at the top of the key. For McConnell, this play would end with a lay-up but depending on the athlete this could be a lob dunk as well.
