Atlanta Hawks Lloyd Pierce: 1st Time Head Coach by Chris Filios

Atlanta Hawks Lloyd Pierce

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

The young and rebuilding Atlanta Hawks have picked former Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Lloyd Pierce to be their next head basketball coach. Pierce replaces Mike Budenholzer who left after five years with the team to fill the same position with the Milwaukee Bucks. For Pierce, this will be his first head-coaching job. So who is Atlanta Hawks Lloyd Pierce? Here is a quick look at his road to the Hawks:

Bay Area Native from San Jose, CA
Played college basketball at Santa Clara University with Steve Nash
Assistant coach at Santa Clara University (2003-07)
Player Development Coach- Cleveland Cavaliers (2007-10)
Assistant Coach- Golden State Warriors (2010-11)
Assistant Coach- Memphis Grizzlies (2011-13)
Assistant Coach- Philadelphia 76ers (2013-18)

Atlanta Hawks Lloyd Pierce built his reputation around the NBA as a player development expert. He got his start in the NBA with the Cavaliers just at the same time as Lebron James arrived. With a combination of expertise and hard work, Pierce was able to earn the trust of many of the game’s biggest names- including James. When Pierce joined the Warriors, he worked with the Warrior’s young talent- Curry and Thompson. Through the years, he has worked with many of the NBA’s talents- Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, Robert Covington, James, and Dwayne Wade.

Atlanta Hawks Lloyd Pierce will have much work to do with the youth-filled roster. Already a young team, the Hawks have added several young stars to the roster through the draft in Trae Young, Kevin Huerter, and Omari Spellman. Pierce should be well prepared for the challenge of developing these young players.

While Atlanta Hawks Lloyd Pierce is a defensive-minded guy, here are a handful of plays from their summer league. While they don’t have their full roster, these may give us a glimpse of what we may see from Pierce and the Hawks this year.
