Wes Kosel will enter his first season as an Assistant Coach at Augustana University under Tom Billeter in 2016-2017. Kosel came to Sioux Falls after two season at Colorado College as the lead assistant. Kosel, a native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, served as an assistant coach at Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Texas Lutheran University from 2012-2014. Kosel graduated from the University of Kansas in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He also has a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Houston. While attending Kansas, Kosel served as an assistant coach at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. A life-long student of the game, Kosel honed his coaching skills by working summer camps for various programs in Texas, Colorado, Missouri, and New Mexico. Kosel also is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a Certified Personal Trainer, both of which are certifications earned through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Kosel and his wife, Molly, live in Colorado Springs.

ASC Division III Playbook by Wes Kosel

Attached in this playbook are 8 plays from 3 American Southwest Conference teams (2 former and 1 current). The first four plays are from former Schreiner University Head Coach Jimmy Smith. In his two seasons at Schreiner, he won 26 games. In his first season at Texas Lutheran, Smith led the Bulldogs to a SCAC Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. The next two plays are from Mary Hardin-Baylor Head Coach Ken DeWeese. DeWeese is in his 18th season as head coach at UMHB and has won over 300 games. Jimmy Smith played for DeWeese at UMHB and served as an assistant before taking the job at Schreiner. The last two plays are from former Texas Lutheran Head Coach Tommy Jones. I worked for Tommy Jones for two seasons at TLU from 2012-2014. Jones coached at TLU for 7 seasons and was the head coach at Houston Baptist in the 1980’s. Jones and DeWeese worked together at Texas-El Paso under the legendary Don Haskins. Both Schreiner and TLU left the ASC and joined the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2013. The ASC now has 13 members spanning Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

ASC Members: Belhaven University, Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, and University of Texas at Tyler.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), both certifications given through the National Strength & Conditioning Association. He has coached summer AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, USA Basketball, University of Houston, Colorado, New Mexico, Air Force, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Kosel is also a member of the NABC International Committee and serves as the committee’s social media manager.
