I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Archie Miller Dayton Zone Offense by Mark Chapman

Coach Archie Miller and the Dayton Flyers made a great run through the 2014 NCAA tournament despite being undersized in their two wins. This post is showing some of the plays that Coach Miller ran against Stanford’s 2-3 zone.

The first set of the Archie Miller Dayton Zone Offense uses an athletic and versatile four man to make guarding the ball at the top of the key difficult. Setting the screen from the inside or outside on the two defenders has the same purpose of creating space for the guards to penetrate and draw more defenders. In this set they start by getting the ball reversed from one side of the floor to the other, before they try to drive against the defense. When the guard penetrates he should look to pass to the opposite block or wing as passing to the same side of a zone can be difficult.

The second set of the Archie Miller Dayton Zone Offense uses a four out one in set with a continuous flare screen to get the ball to the low wing. This movement forces the bottom of the 2-3 zone to come out to the perimeter and cover the ball. This allows the post player to post up against the middle of the 2-3.

The third play of the Archie Miller Dayton Zone Offense uses a runner, typically an athletic 3 man, cutting from the corner to the ball side short corner. The offensive set still uses a high post screener and penetration to draw the defense up which allows the cutter to settle under the bottom of the zone. At this point the cutter can look to score or drive to the middle, which is where the defense is taught to collapse, to kick for three on the opposite wing.

One area that Dayton was very effective was in crashing the offensive boards. While they were undersized they were very active at crashing the gaps when a shot went up. Teaching ball reversal, penetrating the gaps, and offensive rebounds against any zone will be most beneficial.
