Attached are three offensive plays from Colorado Mesa Head Coach Andy Shantz. Colorado Mesa is a Division II institution and a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). 2014-2015 completed Shantz’s second season as head coach of the Mavericks. From year one to year two, Mesa improved its win total from 13 to 19 including a 14-8 conference record this season. Ryan Stephan, a junior for the Mavericks, was 4th in scoring this season in Division II with 25.3 points per game. Before taking over as head coach for the Mavericks, Shantz was an assistant coach and former player. As a two-year player for Mesa, Shantz was a part of a 41-16 record and a West Division Championship in 1997. In addition, Shantz ranks 8th all-time in 3-point field goals made (74).

1 dribbles off of a high ball-screen from 5 as 3 flares off of a screen from 4. If the flare or roll are not open, 1 passes to 2 as 4 cuts off of a cross-screen from 5. Once 4 has the ball, 2 and 1 set a staggered-screen for 3.

3 loops into the lane and around both posts back to where he started on the left wing. 1 passes to 4 at the elbow and 3 cuts off of 5 into the lane for a lay-up.
Andy Shantz Colorado Mesa Offense – Zipper Side Screen
5 sets a zipper-screen for 2 as 1 dribbles to the right wing. If 2 isn’t open, 5 sets a ball-screen for 1 on the wing. Often, the point guard will turn down the ball-screen and drive baseline. If this happens, 5 sets a flare-screen for 2 who cuts to the wing for a shot.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
