Andy Enfield USC Trojans Uptempo Offense

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Andy Enfield USC Trojans Uptempo Offense

Andy Enfield USC Trojans
The Andy Enfield USC Trojans are slowly becoming a powerhouse. The USC Trojans win over number eight UCLA has resulted in the climb to the mountain top. They pulled off the big upset last week in front of Galen Center and won 86-74.

It’s their fourth consecutive win over UCLA. USC has won two regular season games and one in the conference tournament in 2015-2016. USC was 1-10 versus UCLA before this four-game streak

UCLA has a better team this season and more history on their side, but their rival keeps beating them. Competing against your number one rival is a huge part of becoming a high-level basketball team.

Coach Enfield is on track to put USC on that level in the Pac-12 Conference. He is doing it with a fun, uptempo type of basketball play. USC has typically been a middle of the road team in the Pac 12 until Tim Floyd came along in the 2000’s. Coach Floyd had a great four-year run where his last three teams were 20 win seasons with trips to the NCAA Tournament. Coach Floyd also had four current NBA Players in DeMar DeRozan, Nikola Vucevic, Nick Young, and Taj Gibson.

Coach Enfield came to Los Angeles from Florida Gulf Coast University after their historic run. His team nicknamed “Dunk City” as they were the eighth 15th seed to beat a number two seed. That team got to the Sweet Sixteen and got him hired at USC.

Coach Enfield has recruited a lanky, athletic, uptempo squad where they love to fast break and shoot the quickest in the country. KenPom.com has their offensive possession length at 20th, 10th, and 20th in Coach Enfield’s three years.

They run a spread out offense where they run the floor and attack the basket. USC was very good at shooting threes and rank 20th in three-point percentage this season. If they aren’t hitting threes, then they haven’t been attempting enough. Three of the four losses have come when USC puts up fewer than 18 three point attempts a game.

USC runs a spread-out half court offense despite their love for transition offense. USC can run the floor and attack the basket but are especially adept at shooting threes. The Trojans ranked 20th in three-point percentage in 2015-16, shooting 38.6 percent from outside.
