Andrew Bogut Milwaukee Bucks Lob Play by Adam Spinella
A simple way to get an alley oop is by a “screen the screener” set, where the man who just set a screen comes off another screen. These plays are usually effective because the defender of the first screener usually put himself in position to appropriately guard the first action, leaving space between him and his man for the second screener to capitalize on. More often than not, screen the screener actions in emergency situations cause switches between the defenders.
That’s exactly what Scott Skiles and the Milwaukee Bucks predicated their attack on in this late game set play, a lob for Andrew Bogut. The second screen came for Bogut, set by Brandon Jennings. This, if it forced a switch, would put Bogut jumping for a lob against a much smaller defender.
Here’s the situation:
-With 0.5 seconds on the clock, the Milwaukee Bucks are tied with the Pacers and only has time for a lob at the rim. Mbah a Moute is the inbounder.
Bogut (5) stands just inside the top of the arc. Ilyasova (4) is at the far elbow, with Salmons (3) on the block beneath him. Jennings (1) is on the ball side block.
Jennings and Bogut set cross screens at the same time. Salmons (3) and Ilyasova (4) are both three point shooters, respected on the switching action by the teams – with 0.5 seconds, an easy pin down for a catch and shoot is possible, although improbable.
After the first screen, Jennings raises and sets a backscreen on Jeff Foster (x5), letting Bogut slip to the rim. In the video, you’ll see Foster plays this very well, sticking to Bogut off the screen and using his body to try and muscle Bogut out of the picture. Instead, Bogut uses his strength and pushes back, finally jumping over Foster for the improbable tip in.
The play was well-scouted by the Pacers; it’s a fairly simple and common lob set to run. Even though the defense can be expecting it, a good pass and good finish still can make it hard to stop.
Here is the video of the Milwaukee Bucks play where Bogut sunk the Pacers and iced the game.
Watch how poorly Darren Collison (x1) defends this action. He’s worried about Jennings popping out for a catch and shoot. He jumps above the action, which leaves Bogut’s defender no room to get around the screen. With Roy Hibbert on the inbounder, Indiana certainly made the pass as difficult as they could.
