Alvin Gentry Coaching U Live 2015 Notes and Diagrams by Tedi Yaghoubian
In this year’s Alvin Gentry Coaching U Live 2015 Clinic which was held in Las Vegas. They had newly appointed head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans Alvin Gentry was invited to be one of the speakers at this annual event. Coach Gentry was the offensive coordinator on Steve Kerr’s staff for the championship winning Golden State Warriors team last season and in this clinic coach Gentry spoke about some of the offensive concepts that were utilised last season by the warriors that helped them win their first championship in more than three decades. In the last two seasons, the top efficiency ranked offensive teams in the NBA have been teams whose offensive coordinator is coach Alvin Gentry. With over 27 years of coaching experience and having worked with some of the greatest coaching minds in the game such Larry Brown, Gregg Popovich and Doug Collins, Alvin Gentry is now one of the utmost respected coaches in the game today in particularly on the offensive end of the floor.
The Alvin Gentry Coaching U Live Notes will describe the fast pace style of play – better known as “7 seconds or less” – was implemented and made popular by coach Mike D’Antoni while he was coaching the Phoenix suns team on which coach Gentry was an assistant from 2003-2009. As he took over as the head coach of the suns from 2009-2013 seasons which included a trip to the western conference finals in 2009-10, Coach Gentry and the suns continued to run with this offensive system and with star player Steve Nash as its point guard the offense continued run almost flawlessly generating tons of layup and wide open three point shots for shooters spreading the floor. He became the fifth head coach in franchise history to lead his team to a Western Conference Finals berth in his first full season. The emphasis of this offense is spacing – keeping the lane open for guards to penetrate and make plays – and also consistent pace. Coach Gentry emphasises running with a purpose and rhythm. What you will also see on the diagrams is another hallmark of this offense – the ‘Drag’ screen which many teams are now using extensively as an early offense action to flow into their half-court offense. It is very difficult to defend against in transition and when the screen is set at the correct angle it can result in a layup or a wide open 3-point shot.
With the rule changes and as the game is becoming more and more position-less, we are now witnessing many other teams in the NBA such as the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks incorporating these quick hitting actions and implementing them into their offensive playbook. Teams are embracing the pace and space style of play and playing small ball, surrounding their playmaking guards with shooters and stretch 4’s in order take advantage of the dribble drive game. In the Alvin Gentry Coaching U Live Notes, you will see how Coach Gentry will take over the New Orleans Pelicans team from this coming season, you can expect to see many of the same actions here in their revised offensive system starring superstar Anthony Davis.
