I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

5 Ball Screen Plays by Wes Kosel

Diagrammed in this playbook are 5 ball-screen plays. The first 3 plays use a sideline ball-screen, and the last 2 use a high ball-screen. Using ball-screens create mismatch situations and force the defense to react to the screen & roll or screen & pop options.

Ball Screen Plays – Sideline Ball-Screen #1

4 sets a ball-screen for 1 then pops for a shot. 1 drives toward the free-throw line looking to get to the basket if he can. While this is happening, 5 and 2 move down to set a staggered screen for 3. 3 cuts up for a shot and 2 loops around 5 to the corner. 1 looks to pass to 4 first, 3 second, and 2 last.

Ball Screen Plays – Sideline Ball-Screen #2

1 passes to 3. 5 sets a sideline ball-screen for 3 then rolls to the basket or short corner. After passing to 3, 1 loops around a staggered screen from 2 and 4 for a shot on the wing.

Ball Screen Plays – Sideline Ball-Screen #3

1 dribbles to the wing then receives a ball-screen from 4. If 4 isn’t open on the roll/pop, 1 looks to pass to 2 on the wing. 2 then passes to 3 who passes to 5 cutting to the basket. In the second option, 5 sets a back-screen for 2 who flares to the wing for a shot.

Ball Screen Plays – High Ball-Screen #1

2 sets a ball-screen for 1. 1 dribbles to the wing. While this is happening, 3 cuts to the corner off of a screen from 5. After setting the ball-screen for 1, 2 then flares off of a screen from 4. 1 looks to pass to 3 in the corner or to 2 on the flare for a shot. If 2 gets the ball and doesn’t have a shot, 4 cuts to the basket after setting the screen for 2.

Ball Screen Plays – High Ball-Screen #2

4 sets a high ball-screen for 1. 1 drives toward the elbow and reads the defense. Depending on who helps on the penetration, 1 can pass to 4, 2, or 5. If 1 passes to 2 in the corner, 5 steps across the lane to post up.
