Wes Kosel will enter his first season as an Assistant Coach at Augustana University under Tom Billeter in 2016-2017. Kosel came to Sioux Falls after two season at Colorado College as the lead assistant. Kosel, a native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, served as an assistant coach at Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Texas Lutheran University from 2012-2014. Kosel graduated from the University of Kansas in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He also has a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Houston. While attending Kansas, Kosel served as an assistant coach at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. A life-long student of the game, Kosel honed his coaching skills by working summer camps for various programs in Texas, Colorado, Missouri, and New Mexico. Kosel also is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a Certified Personal Trainer, both of which are certifications earned through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Kosel and his wife, Molly, live in Colorado Springs.

4 Man Transition Drill by Wes Kosel

Here is a full-court transition drills that I learned from Coach Tommy Jones at Texas Lutheran. For this drill, group your players into 3 categories: point guards, wings, and posts. If you have a 4 who is going to run the trailer spot, have him in the post group so that he can run the floor for this drill. This drill is great to get your players moving quickly and efficiently. No dribbling is allowed, so accurate passing is a must. Also, players must run wide and fast to complete the drill. We used to aim for 5 made lay-ups in 25 seconds. The post players must run hard to catch the ball before it hits the ground.

4 Man Transition Drill – Frame 1

The four players start in the lane circling as coach takes a shot. The running lanes shown on the diagram show the wide lanes used by 2 and 3 and the middle section is where the post players will run. On the rebound by 4, he runs out of bounds (make or miss) and inbounds the ball to 1.

It is important that 1 gets his back to the sideline to then cut towards the middle of the floor when catching the inbounds pass from 4. 1 should catch the ball in stride and move quickly up the floor. Without dribbling, 1 passes to 2 running the right wing. 2 makes the lay-up and 4 quickly runs down the middle of the floor to catch the rebound.

4 Man Transition Drill – Frame 3

After the rebounded shot by coach, 4 doesn’t have to step out of bounds to make the pass. He just has to make an accurate pass to 1 as he moves up the floor. The drill continues up and down the court for 25 seconds.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), both certifications given through the National Strength & Conditioning Association. He has coached summer AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, USA Basketball, University of Houston, Colorado, New Mexico, Air Force, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Kosel is also a member of the NABC International Committee and serves as the committee’s social media manager.
