2014 SMU Basketball Coaches Clinic Notes
Larry Brown:
“Make the game better”
“We all learn from each other”
Things we can control
– You can kids in great shape
– Get them to play unselfishly
– Get them to play hard
– Make it fun
“Kids have to earn the right to be on the court”
– The more sacrifices kids make, the more coachable they become
– Windsprints only if disrespectful or selfish
– Players want you to give them a chance to win & to help them improve
– If you want to be great defensively, you can’t take bad shots

Be the best at what you do.
VCU 5 core values | 2014 SMU Basketball Coaches Clinic Notes
1. Appreciation- Every opportunity is a gift. Appreciation to entitlement ratio
2. Enthusiasm- You either have to practice or you get to practice.
3. Competitiveness-Aggressively pursue excellence
4. Teamship- We commit fully to aligning ourselves with our team. Have a team of guys who have “gotten over themselves”- Poppovich
5. Accountability- Your habits must match expectations. Must expose this hypocrisy in player behavior
“Havoc”
• Fullcourt pressure defense
• Halfcourt pressure defense
• Transition offense
• Attacking halfcourt offense
• Fly to offensive boards
2 Types of Pressure Defense
1. Straight Man to Man
2. Trapping
Combine both:
• Achieve element of surprise
• They work well together
“If you’re going to trap you need to be able to measure its success”.” Is it helping or hurting us?
Your ability to defend in outnumbered situations is a must
-Must play 5 on 4, 4 on 3 everyday
If you want to trap, every day you should work on outnumbered situations
– “You have to be able to fix it”
“Once a team breaks your pressure, you’re pressure should not break.”
As mush as possible deny 1st pass into teams offense.DGP- “Don’t Get Penetrated”
Trapping Fundamentals | 2014 SMU Basketball Coaches Clinic Notes
1. On inbound, you must be close enough to touch
2. Element of surprise, anytime you see back of head…Come trap
– Seldom trap up sideline unless you can do it in 3 strides
3. Trapping between lane lines doesn’t work well
– If have element of surprise you can trap anywhere
– Don’t trap big who can be trapped by one guy
4. If not in the trap…Must closeout in the trap
– In the trap must be elastic
– Must have 4 active hands once trap is set
– Most common pass is over the top
5. If ball goes above dribblers head, all 4 hands involved in trap must go up.
– Take the space away, they have to smell your breath
6. Take away space, force obvious pass
– Makes easier for interceptor
7. NO splits, every guy takes a charge everyday at practice, use lower half of body
8. We want to foul as much as we can without it being called
9. No escape, it takes 2 to be good at a trap
– Kamikaze coverage, goal tender rotates up, 2 trappers & 3 interceptors
– Interceptor always in open stance reading the ball handler
– Goal tender can’t let ball go over his head & allow no layups
10. “Fist”
– Pressure- Mad Man on ball with 10 toes facing end line, try to get 3 deflections per game
– Hammer up on other 4 spots, forearm & elbow into your man
– Positioning
– Stunting
“The more pressure we put on the ball, the more we can extend our 1/3 off the ball”

Focus Areas
1. Guard ½ court man defense, 15 D stations— email and get these
2. Run Transition game
3. Execution Sec Break, Ball screen O, Set plays
4. Rebounding
“We are as a team going to be what we emphasize and what we practice.”
– Constantly coaching plays fast
– Win the first 3 steps
-Beyond that win that tenth of a second when you know you are transitioning “The Moment of Truth”
– Bigs compete to inbound the ball and use their directional momentum to get out of bounds on a side.
– Point guard gets above ft line with butt to sideline
– 2+3 run wide and to dead corners / other big runs to rim to plow and seal.
– First look is to pitch ahead
– Option 1 is a great shot before defense is set
1. Lay up
2. Ball is driven into lane and pitched out
– Play fast doesn’t mean shoot fast
– Run some offense, if no early great shot
– We get early shots when we do 2 things
1. Do your job
2. Share ball/ make easy play
The play after the play breaks down
1. In year one they went 3 and out 2 in motion
2. Now they use a ball screen continually
Ball screen motion | 2014 SMU Basketball Coaches Clinic Notes
1. Closest big will chase the ball and sprint to screen and pop your feet with 2 feet
2. Opposite big goes to short corner with heels to baseline
3. Guards work together
A- Flare screen
B- Down screen
4. When ball hits the lane line short corner big punches
5. On refusal screen
6. 2 guard side
7. Roll and replace on twist
Bill Self- KU | 2014 SMU Basketball Coaches Clinic Notes
– When setting a screen point your butt where you want the teammate to go
– Have every big have a ball during Indy O
