2014 FIBA World Cup: Australia SLOBs by Wes Kosel
Here are two sideline out-of-bounds plays used by Australia in the 2014 FIBA World Cup. Australia went 3-3 in the FIBA World Cup and finished 3rd in Group D behind Lithuania and Slovenia. For the tournament, Australia ranked 1st in 3-point field goal percentage (47.9%) and 4th in assists per game (17.0). The team is Coached by Andrej Lemanis, who previously served as the head coach of the New Zealand Breakers and led them to three consecutive championship titles in 2011, 2012, and 2013. One of Lemanis’ assistants for the Australian National team is Luc Longley, former 3-time NBA Champion with the Chicago Bulls. The 2014 roster featured several NBA players including Matthew Dellavedova (Cleveland Cavaliers), Cameron Bairstow (Chicago Bulls), Dante Exum (Utah Jazz), and Aron Baynes (San Antonio Spurs). Baynes led the Australian team in scoring and rebounding for the tournament with 16.8 ppg and 7.0 rpg.

2 pops out and gets the pass from 1. 4 sets a flare-screen for 3 then pops out to get the pass from 2. Once 4 has the ball, he dribbles left to give 2 the ball on a dribble hand-off. At the same time, 5 sets a back-screen for 1. 2 looks to score or hit 1 on the cut. If 1 isn’t open, he turns to cut back to the left wing off of a staggered screen from 5 and 4.

2 makes a zipper cut off of 5 and gets the pass from 1. 2 dribbles left as 1 cuts off of a screen from 5 and a double screen from 3 and 4. 2 looks to hit 1 in the corner for a shot. If 1 isn’t open, 4 dives to the block and 3 cuts to the wing off of a screen from 5.
Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
