A HUGE “Thank You to Coach Justin Zachary for the 2013 TPG Sports Group Masters In Coaching Clinic Notes.  Coach Zachary is the Head Basketball Coach The King’s Academy in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Attached are notes from the 2013 TPG Sports Group Masters In Coaching Clinic. TPG does a great job with their clinic giving coaches access to interact with speakers and special guests through socials, whiteboard Q & A as well as the clinic itself. The clinic is held every year in Charlotte and attracts coaches from all over the country.

The 2013 master’s clinic offered a wide range of speakers and topics on the court as well as off the court in a less formal setting. On court speakers included ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla and Paul Biancardi, Hall-of-Fame Coach Bob Hurley of St. Anthony, Drew Hanlen of Pure Sweat and Iowa St Head Coach Fred Hoiberg.

Fred Hoiberg
– Watches last 5 games of opponent before they play
– Looks to create mismatches on offense
– Tries to force two players to guard one
– Force the opponent to play offense in the area they are not used to.
– Force another team out of their comfort zone
– Watches more NBA than college; watch playoff games back-to-back to see adjustments

Special guests that contributed to the clinic in whiteboard sessions include former UNC Head Coach Matt Doherty and China’s National Team Head Coach Bob Donewald.

The TPG Master’s In Coaching Clinic is a first class event, and I would recommend any coach to attend. The notes include skill development, overall philosophy, offense and spacing and thoughts from Bob Hurley on how he runs his high school program.
