Quick Hitters Plays by Mark Chapman

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Various Offensive Box Set Plays by Mark Chapman

One of the things I like about football is how coaches can disguise plays by running different plays out of the same formation. Here are three box sets that can be used in your offense.
1. Punch
This play starts with the wings at the high post and breaking out to the wing. The ball can be entered to either side. The PG then sets a down screen for the opposite post player, then turns and sets a back screen for the opposite wing. These two quick screens will allow the ball handler to have three options very quickly. He can feed the post, look for the cutter off the back screen or reverse to the five man at the top. If ball gets reversed the offense is perfect for a guard to post player block to block screen
2. Memphis
This play starts with a dribble entry to a wing that is away from the post player you want the ball to go to. The guards on the block set a double screen as he cuts under. Put your best shooter as the second screener so that he’s in position to cut to the top off of the double screen for the shot at the top of the key.
3. Drag
When using a ball screen at the top of a play make sure your players are familiar with the scouting report and ready handle the switch, trap, over/under movement and any rotations that may come with it. This play is best used with a point guard that can handle the ball off of the high ball screen but also able to attack the lane. Having a shooter at the five and three position and the four man following off of the backscreen will allow the point guard to have multiple options and force the defense to pick and choose what they will cover.
