Tony Bennett Virginia Cavaliers ATO Play by Dana Beszczynski
Two nights ago, the Virginia Cavaliers were taken to the limit against the Golden Bears of Cal.
Tony Bennett designed three consecutive timeout plays each of which yielded a basket. This is the first of those timeout plays.
Run from the SLOB situation, the play is set-up by the elbow screen action which gave Brogdon a chance to either “read” and cut to the basket or come back off the “re-screen” action for a possible jumper.
Tony Bennett is known for his defensive strategies, but last night these timeout actions he ran with his Cavs only showed what a true mastermind of the game he is.
The revitalization of Virginia basketball under Tony Bennett started with defense. The defensive efficiency ranking for te last two seasons have been very high and the Virginia Cavaliers have won 30 games an the ACC regular season title in consecutive seasons.
The proble for the Virginia Cavaliers has been offense. The Virginia Cavaliers has been trending upward on that side of the ball, finishing, No. 21 and No. 24 respectively in offensive efficiency the last two seasons, but still failed to break 60 points in NCAA Tournament losses to Michigan State in 2014 and 2015. For this season to be different, Virginia’s offense would have to follow the jump of the defense and go from good to great.
In it’s first 10 games, the Virigina Cavaliers are doing doing just that. The Cavaliers exploded for 1.43 points per possession in an 86-75 win over No. 12 Villanova on Saturday, scoring 53 second half points to seal the victory. One season after leading the country in defensive efficiency, Virginia is now leading the country in offensive efficiency
