Tom Crean Marquette Box Set Plays by Wes Kosel
Here are 8 plays used by Tom Crean when he was the head coach at Marquette. All of the plays start in a box set and include multiple scoring options. Several of the plays start with similar screens or cuts, which makes it difficult for the opposing team to scout and guard.
Tom Crean Marquette Box Set Plays 1:
Box 1 starts with 1 dribbling to the wing. 3 pops to the wing and 2 makes a zipper cut up the lane. 1 passes to 2. Once 2 has the ball, he dribbles toward 3 and then passes to 3 on the wing. After making the pass, 2 sets a down screen for 4. As this is happening, 1 steps down next to 2. 3 looks for a driving opportunity, but if this isn’t open passes to 4 who passes to 2 popping to the wing. 1 sets a cross screen for 5 then cuts off of a down screen from 4.
Tom Crean Marquette Box Set Plays 2:
1 passes to 2 cutting off of a down screen. 2 looks for 4 posting up, then passes back to 1. 5 then sets a ball screen for 1. 3 pops to the wing, and 2 cuts through to the corner. 5 sets a down screen for 4, and 1 looks to pass to 4 or 5. 1 can also pass to 3 for a shot or to 2 in the corner. If neither of these options are open, 1 passes to 4 who dribbles to the wing looking to make a pass to 5 in the post.
Tom Crean Marquette Box Set Plays 3:
3 sets a down screen for 2, who pops to the wing. 5 moves up to the elbow next to 4. 1 passes to 2, then fakes running off of 3’s screen and instead sets a ball screen for 2. 3 loops around 4 and 5’s double screen looking for a shot on the wing. If the shot isn’t open, 5 is diving to the basket and 4 is popping to the top of the key.
Tom Crean Marquette Box Set Plays 4:
1 dribbles toward the wing, then passes to 5 at the top of the key. 2 loops around 3 and 1 loops around 4 to the wing. 5 passes to 2 on the wing. 3 sets a cross screen for 4, then 5 sets a screen for 3.
Tom Crean Marquette Box Set Plays 5:
2 runs off of 5 to the opposite wing, while 4 sets a cross screen for 3. 1 first dribbles toward 2, and can make the pass if 2 is open. If not, 1 dribbles toward 3 and passes to 3 on the wing for a shot.
Tom Crean Marquette Box Set Plays 6:
3 sets a cross screen for 2 who loops up toward the wing. After setting the screen, 3 loops back to the corner. 1 passes to 2, and then cuts to the basket off of a back screen from 4. 2 looks to make a lob pass to 1. If the pass isn’t open, 2 passes to 4 who looks to attack the rim.
Tom Crean Marquette Box Set Plays 7:
4 and 5 set down screens for 3 and 2 who pop to the wings. 1 passes to 2 then cuts through to the ball side corner. 5 sets a cross screen for 4, then looks to seal his defender and posts up hard under the basket. 2 looks for 5 posting up or to 4 for a shot.
Tom Crean Marquette Box Set Plays 8:
1 dribbles toward 3 on the wing, then changes directions and uses a ball screen from 5 at the top of the key. After 4 sets a down screen for 3, he cuts off of a cross screen from 2. If 4 isn’t open, 1 passes to 2 cutting off of a double down screen from 3 and 5.
Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Tommy Jones at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, TX. 2013-2014 marks the second year for Kosel at TLU. Prior to arriving at TLU, Kosel served as a student assistant coach under Head Coach Chad Killscrow at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, KS. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and teaches weight training and aerobic fitness courses at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi
