team toughness drills

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Team Toughness Drills – Shooting Drills by Tedi Yaghoubian

The attached mini-playbook contains 5 team drills including 2 full-court shooting drills that can be used to build conditioning and team toughness in your program. The biggest advantage of such drills is that they are basketball orientated as opposed to just straight out running. All these drills are working on multiple aspects of the game on both ends of the floor while developing that game-like conditioning and toughness that sometimes goes missing from teams late in games.

Team Toughness Drills: 2 on 2 Get Back Drill
The first drill is a full court transition drill that works on both offensive decision making & finish skills as well defensive transition. Developing high IQ players with the ability to make reads and decisions in the open court are vital to a team’s success offensively. On the other end of the floor – being able to get back, talk, match-up, guard the ball and stop teams from getting easy baskets are critical to a team’s defensive transition system. This drill helps develop that mindset. This drill can be run to a score or can be run for a certain amount of time.

Team Toughness Drills: 4 Zone Drill
The second drill ‘4 Zone Drill’ drill is designed for improving ball toughness under pressure for offensive players and also developing one-on-one defensive skills. This drill should perhaps be incorporated in your team’s skill development portion as this is not a team drill – it should be run with 4-5 players on the floor. This drill simulates game-like situations where a ball handler is pressured full court. The only rule for the offensive player is that he/she must stay within the width of the cones and cannot turn their back to the defender.
If your team struggles with turnovers this tough drill is bound to improve your team’s performance in this category.

Team Toughness Drills: Alley Defensive Drill
This is another tough defensive / offensive drill and a terrific conditioner. This drill can be run at high school, collegiate and even pro levels. The emphasis of this drill to maintain a good defensive stance and work on developing footwork required to be able to guard the ball effectively. A great and efficient team drill where you have 12-16 players at practice as it gets everyone working at the same time. Every player must play offense 3 times and must play defense 3 times.

Team Toughness Drills: Full Court Shooting Drills
The first drill is a full-court catch and shoot drill. It is a great conditioning drill while working on shooting with the whole team involved. As a variation coaches can add a shot fake & 1-dribble pull-up jump shot. This drill can be run in between other drills or at the end of a session.
The second drill is very similar except the players dribble the full-length of the court and take a pull-up jump shot from their range.
I hope you find this drill book useful for your team and your program this season.
