Shaka Smart Texas High Ball-Screen Sets by Wes Kosel

Attached in this playbook are three high ball-screen plays used by Texas Longhorns and Coach Shaka Smart in the game against Vanderbilt. Smart likes to get his quick, crafty guards into high ball-screen situations to spread the floor and put pressure on the defense. The guards look to create a shot off the dribble or pass to set shooters on the perimeter. Conner Lammert has had a good season so far living off of penetrate and kick opportunities as well as roll/replace 3-point shots.

Texas is 14-7 coming in to the game against Baylor (last night) and is 5-3 in Big 12 play. It will be interesting to see what Coach Smart does to attack Baylor’s zone defense. I would expect Coach Smart to continue to implement ball-screen actions to open up his shooters.

Shaka Smart Texas High Ball-Screen Sets – Longhorns Cross Roll/Replace

1 dribbles left as 3 sets a cross-screen for 5. 5 sprints up to set a ball-screen for 1. 5 rolls and 4 replaces 5.

Shaka Smart Texas High Ball-Screen Sets – Longhorns Drag

4 sets a drag-screen for 1 and pops for a shot. 1 then dribbles to the right looking to give the ball to 3. If 1 keeps the ball, 5 sets a ball-screen for 1.

Shaka Smart Texas High Ball-Screen Sets – Weave High Roll/Replace

1 gives the ball to 2 on a hand-off while 4 runs down to the block. 2 then gives 3 the ball on a hand-off as 4 moves to the corner. 3 dribbles right as 1 cuts to the top of the key for a pass. Once 1 has the ball, 5 sets a high ball-screen for 1.
