Wes Kosel will enter his first season as an Assistant Coach at Augustana University under Tom Billeter in 2016-2017. Kosel came to Sioux Falls after two season at Colorado College as the lead assistant. Kosel, a native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, served as an assistant coach at Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Texas Lutheran University from 2012-2014. Kosel graduated from the University of Kansas in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He also has a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Houston. While attending Kansas, Kosel served as an assistant coach at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. A life-long student of the game, Kosel honed his coaching skills by working summer camps for various programs in Texas, Colorado, Missouri, and New Mexico. Kosel also is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a Certified Personal Trainer, both of which are certifications earned through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Kosel and his wife, Molly, live in Colorado Springs.

San Antonio Spurs Zipper Plays

Attached in this playbook are 3 zipper plays from San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich including a horns set play, a box set play, and a secondary play. The Spurs are coming off of a 55-27 record and a 3rd place finish in the Southwest Division. The Spurs lost to the Clippers in the First Round of the NBA Playoffs pushing the series to 7 games. Before that, the Spurs had finished 1st in the Southwest Division 4 straight seasons. In Coach Popovich’s time with the Spurs (1996 – present), he has won 1022 games to 470 losses. The Spurs have also made 18 playoff appearances, won 12 division titles, won 6 conference titles, and 5 NBA Championships under Coach Popovich. The next closest Coach in number of wins behind Coach Popovich is Doug Moe, who Coached the Spurs from 1976 – 1980. Stan Albeck and Larry Brown each have 153 wins as head coaches of the Spurs.

San Antonio Spurs Zipper Plays – Horns Dribble Zipper

1 dribbles left pushing 2 into a zipper cut around 5. 1 passes to 2. Once 2 has the ball, 4 sets a wide pin-down screen for 3 in the corner. 2 looks to pass to 3 cutting to the basket.

San Antonio Spurs Zipper Plays – Box Zipper Triple

1 dribbles right as 2 makes a zipper cut off of 4’s screen. 1 passes to 2. 2 then dribbles left as 1 cuts around a triple staggered-screen from 4, 3, and 5.

San Antonio Spurs Zipper Plays – Secondary Zipper

1 dribbles to the left wing pushing 3 around 5 on a zipper cut. 1 passes to 3 then cuts down below 5 and back out to the perimeter. If 1 isn’t open, 3 dribbles right as 1 cuts across the floor around a triple staggered-screen from 5, 4, and 2.

Wes Kosel just completed his first year as an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas and a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, USA Basketball, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
