I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Roy Williams North Carolina Tarheels Offense by Wes Kosel

Attached are two option plays from the Roy Williams North Carolina Tarheels Offense . Being a Jayhawk, I grew up idolizing Coach Williams and his Kansas teams. I still remember the 2003 NCAA Championship game vs. Syracuse like it was yesterday! Hakeem Warrick blocked Michael Lee’s shot in the corner (that would have gone in!), and Carmelo Anthony and Gerry McNamara stole a championship from the Jayhawks. Although some Jayhawk fans resent Coach Williams for leaving, I have tremendous respect for him as a coach. Williams has won over 700 games in his career, and is second in wins at Kansas behind Phog Allen and second in wins at North Carolina behind Dean Smith. Those are some pretty good names to be second to!

Roy Williams North Carolina Tarheels Offense: Screen Option

1 dribbles toward 2 and gives the ball to 2 on a dribble hand-off. 5 moves across and up the lane to the opposite elbow. 3 works his defender down toward the baseline to set him up for the screen.

Option 1: 2 dribbles toward the top of the key and receives a high ball-screen from 4. If 3’s defender jumps toward the middle of the lane, 3 uses 5’s screen to cut to the wing for a shot.

Option 2: If 3’s defender tries to play outside of 3 and jump the screen, 3 instead cuts toward the basket. 2 continues his dribbles across the floor to the opposite wing and looks for 5 posting up. If 5 isn’t open, 2 passes to 3 on a staggered screen from 1 and 4.

Roy Williams North Carolina Tarheels Offense: Lob Option

4 sets a wide down-screen for 3 in the corner. 3 cuts to the wing. 1 looks for 3 on the wing for to 4 cutting to the basket after setting the down screen.

Option 1: 5 sets an up-screen for 1 who cuts to the basket for a lob pass form 3. 4 steps to the short corner to clear the lane for the lob.

Option 2: 1 sets a down screen for 5 who cuts to the elbow for a shot. 2 cuts toward the basket for a back-door cut if his defender helps on the screen. If 5 isn’t open, he turns and sets a staggered down screen with 1 for 2 who cuts to the top of the key for a shot.
