Roy Williams North Carolina Tarheels Lob Plays by Wes Kosel

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Roy Williams North Carolina Tarheels Lob Plays by Wes Kosel

Attached in this playbook are two lob plays from Coach Roy Williams. The first play is an option out of North Carolina’s secondary offense, and the second play is a baseline out-of-bounds play from a box set. Both of these plays utilize a decoy player that clears the lane for the lob pass.

Roy Williams North Carolina Tarheels Lob Plays – Secondary Lob

This secondary option is signaled by 1 dribbling from the wing toward the top of the key. As 1 starts toward the top of the key, 5 steps toward 1 and sets a ball-screen. 4 moves across the lane away from the ball. As 1 comes off of the ball-screen from 5, 4 moves up the lane line to bring his defender away from the basket. 3 moves in from the corner and sets a rear screen on 5 who just set the ball screen for 1. 1 looks to make a lob pass to 5 for a dunk or lay-up. If the lob isn’t open, 1 passes to 3 who steps out after screening for 5. 3 then dribbles toward the wing and looks to create a passing angle to pass to 5 in the post. If 5 isn’t open, 3 passes to 2 cutting off of a staggered wide pin down screen from 1 and 4.

Roy Williams North Carolina Tarheels Lob Plays – Baseline Lob

In this BLOB play, 3 moves first cutting to the ball-side corner off of a screen from 4. If open, 3 takes the shot. If 3 isn’t open, 5 cuts hard to the baseline looking to take his defender away from the action in the lane. 2 then screens down for 4 who just screened for 3. 4 loops around 2 looking for the lob pass from 1.
