Roy Williams Basketball Coaching Tips Part 2
By Coach Monroe
This post is a few years old but Coach Williams has a lot of good insight for team building, leadership, coaching points, and general basketball knowledge that are beneficial for coaches at any point in their career. These thoughts are perfect for talking with captains of your team to build a sound team from the top down.
“Be on the lookout for the little things in recruiting”
– So many things off the court can tell you about a student-athlete and how they’ll act on the court
– Interaction with teammates
– How they talk to their parents before/after games
– Body language and demeanor on the court with officials
– How they interact with their coach
– Loves it when the best player on the team is the best leader (the kid that doesn’t think anything is below him as long as it helps the team!)
“Winning TEAMS get the individual awards and rewards”
– If your team wins games that’s the team that will get the individual awards
– Players that play the game for individual awards tend not to get them because their teams aren’t very successful.
– Players must buy into the team and winning FIRST
“Team vs. Talent – that’s a welcomed insult”
– When a media site or team claim your team is something you don’t think is true, use that to your advantage and get your players to prove they’re wrong.
– Players love to prove the critics wrong
“Illinois is too good of a team not to make a run – I’ve got to be the calmest person in the crowd when they do.”
– Understanding the situation and the team you’re playing will allow you to show strength to your team at a time when they might panic
– Preparing for the moment BEFORE the moment arrives will allow the leader to be effective
– Be able to refocus a team after a tough spot in the game
– Don’t allow your team to let a little run deter them from their job
“You can coach someone and still see 30 years later the impact you had – whether good or bad”
– Believe what you do matters in the long run
– You can impact a player for the rest of their life
– Teach life lessons that will transcend basketball and impact their life
– Coach Williams had a rough start to his high school coaching career (2-19) but was able to develop good core fundamentals and stick to them. This has led to his success over the years and enabled him to be a dominate coach at the division I NCAA level.
