I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. Reggie Theus Cal State Northridge Matadors Zipper Plays by Wes Kosel

Here are 2 Reggie Theus Cal State Northridge Matadors Zipper Plays. Theus just completed his first year as head coach at Cal State Northridge. The Matadors play in the Big West Conference and lost to Cal Poly in the Big West Conference championship game. The Matadors upset Hawaii and Long Beach State to reach the championship game. Theus is best known for his career in the NBA in which he played from 1978 – 1991. Theus then went on to coach at New Mexico State from 2005-2007 and in the NBA for the Sacramento Kings during the 2007-2008 season. Theus then went on to coach for the Los Angeles D-Fenders in the NBA D-League before accepting the position at Cal State Northridge. The Matadors won 17 games this season and most impressively were ranked 1st in free-throw percentage in the NCAA at 79.1%.

1 dribbles to the wing as 2 makes a zipper cut off of a screen from 4. Once 2 has the ball, 3 cuts up off of a screen from 5. 2 passes to 3. 1 then cuts off of a staggered baseline screen from 4 and 5. 3 passes to 1 in the corner for a shot. If 1 doesn’t have a shot, he dribbles up toward the wing as 2 cuts off of a staggered screen from 4 and 5. 1 looks to pass to 2 at the basket. If 2 isn’t open, he clears to the corner. 5 and 4 move toward 1 as if setting up for a staggered ball-screen. 5 slips the screen looking for a quick pass from 1. 1 dribbles off of the ball-screen from 4 and attacks the lane.

1 dribbles to the right wing as 2 makes a zipper cut off of 4. 1 looks to pass to 2 for a shot. If 2 isn’t open, 3 loops around a screen from 5 and 4 to cut to the corner. 1 passes to 3 in the corner for a shot. If 3 doesn’t have a shot, he looks to penetrate to the basket. 5 steps down to the block and 2 slides to the opposite wing for the pass out if needed.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Tommy Jones at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, TX. 2013-2014 marks the second year for Kosel at TLU. Prior to arriving at TLU, Kosel served as a student assistant coach under Head Coach Chad Killscrow at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, KS. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and teaches weight training and aerobic fitness courses at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
