Program Development Series – “The Payson Way” – Three Sets of Three
When developing a basketball program as the Head Coach, there are so many things that we have to take into consideration. One of the many areas is the Philosophy of your program.
What is your Philosophy?
What do you and your program stand for?
How do you express this to your players and program?
Is your philosophy easy to impart, execute and remember?

The Payson Way – Three Sets of Three (3×3) is how I have been able to break it down into easy to remember, institute and execute within our program. We are training our kids within our program to focus on the PROCESS, and that process for us is broken down into Three Sets of Three…
Set #1 – The Toughness
Effort
Focus
Execution
These are the three keywords we use daily to try and get our players to understand the physical and mental toughness it takes on a consistent basis to become successful in everything they do.
Set #2 – The Mindset
Attitude
Preparation
Performance
These are the three keywords we use to get our players in the right frame of mind to focus on being successful. Positive attitude, the willingness to prepare to be successful regardless of how you feel that day, and being able to perform at your best when your best is needed…regardless of the circumstances we may find ourselves in.
Set #3 – The Play
Aggressive
Disciplined
Unselfish
These are the three keywords we use to describe our play on the floor in practice and in games. Our goal is to build the first two sets of three within our players so that we have the edge mentally over our opponents. This style/philosophy of play, couple with the first two sets of three has led to many wins, championships and success for our program when we have not been the most talented, skilled, biggest or most athletic in many of our games throughout the past 6 seasons.
If you take the time to create your own “Three Sets of Three” that fit into your philosophy, you may just find it easier to communicate your “process” to your players and program. Hopefully that in turn creates an even greater amount of success for you and your program on and off the floor.
Best Swishes!
