Bo Ryan Wisconsin Badgers Offense

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Phil Jackson Chicago Bulls Set Plays by Wes Kosel

Here are 2 set plays from Phil Jackson during his Chicago Bulls coaching days. Jackson is well known for using the triangle offense, and often used set plays that would transition into the triangle offense if no shot was open. Jackson, who just took over as president of the New York Knicks, played for the Knicks in the 60’s and 70’s. As a player, Jackson was a part of 2 championship teams led by Coach Red Holzman. He then went on to win 11 himself as a head coach (6 with the Bulls and 5 with the Lakers); setting the NBA record for most NBA championship titles (the previous record was 9 by Coach Red Auerbach). It will be interesting to see how the Knicks do under Jackson. Maybe we will get to see him coach again!

Phil Jackson Chicago Bulls Set Plays – Baseline Flex

In this first play, the point guard starts with the ball on the right side of the floor and passes to 3 cutting off of a down screen from 2. Once 3 has the ball, 4 makes a flex cut off of 5. Once 4 clears the screens, 5 flashes to the middle of the lane looking for the ball. If neither 4 or 5 is open, 3 passes to 1. Once 1 has the ball, he looks inside to 5 posting up.

Phil Jackson Chicago Bulls Set Plays – Pick & Roll Stagger

This play starts in a box set. 3 cuts to the wing and receives the pass from 1. 1 then loops around a staggered screen from 2 and 4. At the same time, 5 and 3 play a pick-and-roll on the right wing. 3 looks to pass to 5 on the roll or to 1 for the shot.
