I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

NBA Milwaukee Bucks Second Man SLOB Play
By Adam Spinella

Staggered screens are great ways to free up shooters for a catch and shoot – that is true in any situation, even in end game scenarios. In end game scenarios, most defenses will jump at the opportunity to help off a staggered screen and not let a shooter get a good look for three. When that help defender prevents the first stagger, it opens up the help defense for another screening action.

Watch the Milwaukee Bucks run a second staggered screen in this SLOB End Game scenario to get Brandon Jennings free up top and to disperse the help defense on the first shooter. With less than one second for the Bucks, this was the definition of a quick catch and shoot.

Mike Dunleavy (3) is the inbounder. Monta Ellis (2) starts on the far wing, Brandon Jennings (1) on the near block. These are the two “shooting” threats. Sanders (5) and Ilyasova (4) are in a staggered position awaiting 2. Ellis will make his cut, staggering off Ilyasova and Sanders, then looping down towards the corner. Once Ellis clears the stagger, Jennings pops up on a staggered zipper screen for a simple catch and shoot.

You’ll notice that the play works very well because Jennings is left-handed. He is able to protect his shooting arm from the defender and use his right foot (non-shooting foot) as his pivot foot on the catch. Had this been a right-handed shooter, his shot might have been blocked. Knowing which side of the floor your team will be inbounding on and who will have an easy time getting off a shot quickly go hand-in-hand.

Great individual plays beat great defenses. At lower levels, x5 may get in the way of x1 – causing the shooter to get a wide open look. The Cleveland Cavaliers defended this very well and Anderson Varejao did a great job contesting the shot; it didn’t matter after Brandon Jennings got his hands on the ball and made a great shot. If you have a high school team with two very good three-point shooters, Second Man is a simple and effective catch and shoot against lesser opponents.
