NBA Crunch Time

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Success in NBA crunch time shapes players legacies and forces everyone to reevaluate their greatness based on how they perform during these crucial situations. According to the ESPN, the NBA defines crunch time as “less than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter or overtime with neither team ahead by more than five points.” During these moments the focus on players and coaches intensifies, and the great ones usually save their best for last.

This NBA Crunch Time playbook features over 70 of the top “crunch time” plays during the 2016 calendar year. It breaks down some of the top plays from the today’s top NBA Coaches include Greg Popovich, Brad Stevens, Steve Kerr and reigning NBA Coach of the Year Mike Budenholzer. These plays while run by NBA teams, are rooted in their simplicity and can be run at any level of basketball by any coach.

Each set is specifically designed for that particular situation in the game depending on what their team needs at that time. The playbook features sets for open jump shots, threes, layups, post ups and lobs to the rim.

Lots of sets are designed for some of the best players in the NBA to get open shots late in the game. There are NBA Crunch Time sets that were specifically designed for Steph Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul. This playbook features a variety of sets to get a shot for a player at any position.

Sometimes the best teams in the NBA get there by executing down the stretch and winning the close games. Everyone in the NBA is talented and the line between being a good team and a great team is razor thin. Late in games after timeouts the offensive team gets to advance the ball in their own end which gives players and coaches a much better opportunity to score. Coaches then get a chance to show their prowess with the clipboard and put their team in the best position to win a game.

The Golden State Warriors record setting start has not all been blowout wins and highlight reel plays. It has featured many close games that have come down to executing down the stretch in order to keep atop the Western Conference and marching towards the record books. Steve Kerr has drawn up plays late in games for various members of the Warriors and has helped propel them to close victories. The threat of so many potent scorers on the floor open up many opportunities for the rest of the team.
