NBA and NCAA Basketball Drills to Emerge as Champions

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Looking for the best basketball drills for your team?

Basketball DrillsAs a coach, you know there are certain little factors that guide your team to success each and every time you notch up a win. Alternatively, these same factors, if you show insufficiency in them, can lead you to lose many games at any level. The quest for a winning season starts with the first practice, as any coach will tell you. Your approach and your preparation will determine how your players view you and how they view practice each time you meet with them. It’s up to you to be prepared and to show your players that you mean business each time they step on that hardwood, whether it’s for practice or a real game. Famous players such as Magic Johnson always say that you should practice as you play. Many players, especially those who do not get as many minutes during games, they should practice harder and be more worn out at the end of practice than they are in a game. If you can get all your players doing this, you will be heading towards success from the outset. So, you need to get your players working hard and sweating and feeling discomfort during practice sessions. Make them feel pain. Show them the value of hard work.

And, those factors they will need to focus on as guided by you?

Baylor basketball drills for guardsAny team that hits practice hard and focuses on individual skill as well as team toughness will be hard for any opponent, even the most talented, to beat.

First of all, you have to be committed to the fundamentals in practice. You need to get your guys practicing the right shooting techniques, the right passing techniques and dribbling and rebounding basics. Teams that do all of the core skills and fundamentals great will always be able to make up for deficiencies when facing more naturally talented opponents. Athleticism is not something that can be taught, as some teams will just have faster, stronger and bigger players than your team. You cannot do anything about that. But, what you can do something about is how drilled your players are, as skill is something that is taught or learned by practice. Hit the basic basketball drills hard and with seriousness in every single practice and make sure all of your players improve each and every day. If you do this, you will see the general level of your play go up on the court. You will see better shooting percentages, more rebounds and less turnovers as a result of this emphasis. Frankly, and sadly, it’s a key point that so many coaches overlook and neglect these days. Everyone gets too caught up in over-complicated strategies rather than teaching what wins games, that being the fundamentals of the game of basketball.

Looking for a defense that wins games?

You know, as a coach that if your team plays tough on defense it can make up for even the worst off-shooting night. If you are not playing well, there’s two things you need to do. First, you need to be physical on offense and try to get some free points at the free-throw line. Next, you need to toughen up on defense, play physical, and work as hard as you can. It helps if you have several different looks you can show the opposition on defense. It also helps if you work hard at drilling your team in defensive looks that other teams usually do not see. In one game we faced a team that we knew we were better than. However, they surprised us with a weird defensive look we had never run across and it confused us so much that it threw us off our game and we lost by 10 points. If you can do the same thing with your own team, and get them playing a unique and tough defense that will confound and confuse other teams, all opponents will dread facing you.
