Mike Young Wofford Terriers Corner Pin Series by Wes Kosel
Here are four corner pin-down screen plays from Wofford Terriers Head Coach Mike Young. Young has been the head coach at Wofford for 13 seasons, and including his years as an assistant he has been there 26 seasons. At the 2015 NABC Clinic in Indianapolis, Coach Young went over spacing concepts with setting wide pin-down screens in the corners. He emphasized that the screener must make it all the way down to the corner to set the screen, and the cutter must wait for the screener to be set. To ensure this is done in practice, Coach Young puts down tape where he wants the screener to be set. He calls this area the “Patriot Box”. Having the box taped on the floor makes it easy for the screener and cutter to time the perfect pin-down screen. In addition, it makes it easier for coaches to communicate whether or not the screen was executed properly.

In this option, 1 takes a high ball-screen from 4 then hits 4 on the pop. 1 then screens down for 5. Once 5 has the ball, the corner pin-down screen is set for 2 in the corner.

In this horns option, 1 dribbles middle as 5 and 4 both screen down for 3 and 2 in the corners.

5 flashes to the high post to get the entry pass from 1. 1 then sets a wide pin-down screen for 3 in the corner as 4 ducks into the lane on the weak side.

In this play, the Terriers set up in the horns set and the play starts with 1 passing to 4 at the high post. 1 screens down for 3 in the left corner and 5 screens down for 2 in the right corner.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
