I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Mark Turgeon Texas A&M Aggies Hi-Low Set Play by Wes Kosel

Attached is a box set play from Mark Turgeon during his Texas A&M coaching days. The Mark Turgeon Texas A&M Aggies Hi-Low Set Play first uses two down screens to open up shots for the guards. If the guards do not have an open shot, a cross screen is used inside for a hi/lo look. This play overloads one side of the floor, which can open up the post cutter if all of the defenders are helping on the strong side. Turgeon just finished his 3rd year as the head coach of the Maryland Terrapins. The Terrapins finished 17-15 and 9-9 in ACC play. Before that, he was the head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies for 4 seasons. At A&M, Turgeon won 97 games in 4 years and won 70% of his games (his best percentage with a program).

The play starts with the post players at the elbows and wing players at the blocks. 4 makes the first move and screens down for 2. 2 cuts to the wing and receives a pass from 1. Once 2 has the ball, 1 cuts through to the corner. 2 looks inside to 4 posting up, but if he isn’t open he steps below the block. 5 screens down for 3 and 3 tightly curls the screen into the lane. 2 looks to pass to 3 for a shot or lay-up. IF 3 isn’t open, he continues his cut through the lane and screens across for 4. At the same time, 5 flashes to the high post and gets the pass from 2. 5 looks inside to 4 for the hi/lo pass. If 3’s defender helps on the cut from 4, 5 looks to pass inside to 3.
