I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

The Lon Kruger Oklahoma Sooners were a part of the best basketball games that I have watched in quite a while. It was the #1 Bill Self Kansas Jayhawks versus the #2 Lon Kruger Oklahoma Sooners. The setting for one of the most perfect games that I have seen was in Allen Fieldhouse which is the holiest of college basketball arenas. The atmosphrere was still rocking at 11pm central time, because the Bill Self Kansas Jayhawks versus the Lon Kruger Oklahoma Sooners.

The ESPN broadcast duo of Dick Vitale and Brent Musburger could hardly hear each other. ESPN reporter Holly Rowe said that the Kansas Players were straining to hear Coach Bill Self in the huddle.

The result of the game was a Kansas’ 109-106 triple overtime victory against the formerly undefeated Oklahoma Sooners.

The game itself was a premier coaching clinic where you couldn’t go wrong with anything that they were using. I loved this simple play: Lon Kruger Oklahoma Sooners High Ball Screen Flex & Counter.

Bill Self and Lon Kruger who have both coached in a combined 1,668 basketball games, struggle to come up with a better game that they have witnessed or participated in. I can’t remember a more electric regular season game in college basketball.

If you haven’t seen the Kansas-Okahoma game then I am sure that you will have an opportunity soon. The players were pretty tired at the end, but still smiling, and nobody seemed to beam so brightly as Oklahoma Sooner Star Buddy Hield, despite being on the losing side. He finished with 46 points, having played all, but one minute of the 55 minute game.

Hield told the reporters that he planned to watch the game immediately to help himself get better. Maybe all coaches should follow his advice and watch this very special game.
