Larry Brown SMU Mustangs Lob Play vs UCONN

NBA Draft Combine

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Larry Brown SMU Man Lob Play vs UCONN

Larry Brown has done a great job of reviving the basketball program at SMU. After being one of the first teams out of last year’s tournament, he guided them to a regular season and tournament
conference championship before earning their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1993.

Coach Larry Brown is a great resource for coaches in the Dallas area, as he hosts a coaching clinic every fall and he opens up all of the team’s practices to high school coaches. We were even able to bring our entire team out to watch them practice right before the start of the season.

On the court, the Mustangs get after you in the half court on defense, and they have borrowed a lot of the actions and concepts from Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks ‘fist’ offense. He has very high expectations for his guys on the court, and I’ve witnessed first hand how he gets after guys for not playing up to those expectations.

In their conference championship game against the U Conn Huskies, the Mustangs were in control for much of the game. The Huskies had a couple of runs in the first and second half, but the Mustangs did enough to hold them off. At the end of the 1st half, while holding on to a double digit lead, the Mustangs ran a nice, 3 out 2 in lob play against man that resulted in a dunk.

The point guard hit the 3 on the left wing and then exchanged spots with the 2 on the right wing. The 3 reversed the ball to the 2 at the top of the key who finished the reversal to the 1 on the right wing. The 5 man set a cross screen for the 4 who continued off the screen into a back-screen for the 3. The 1 threw the lob to the 3 for the dunk. I have clipped the action below.
