ball screen plays

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Kevin Stallings Vanderbilt Set Plays by Adam Short

It has been a few weeks since I have posted anything new on the website. I have been busy with settling into my new job and trying to sign our last few players. I can’t wait to get started to help put a ring on everyone’s finger that is associated with this this high class program. One thing I picked up from working with Jim Huber is the importance of scouting your opponent’s defense and putting in little sets to counter their defense. This is similar to what offensive coordinators do in football. Your opponent will not be expecting the wrinkles in your game plan. The sets don’t have to be complicated, just effective.

The three slip plays I got are from Vanderbilt. These are three simple plays that are predicated on spacing. I would add these three plays against a defense that I knew was going to hedge ball screens hard and who didn’t get over in their help side defense.

Kevin Stallings Vanderbilt Set Plays: “Slip 1”

“Slip 1” is very basic play. 4 can either start on the left wing or on the right wing and cut over to the left wing. 1 will hit 4. 1 will sprint to set a down screen for 3. 3 will pop up and catch the ball from 4. 5 will cut to the left elbow. As soon as 3 catches the ball, 5 will sprint to 3 then slip right to the basket. 1 will pop up to create space for 5 diving. 3 is looking to hit 5 for a basket.

Kevin Stallings Vanderbilt Set Plays: “Slip 2”

“Slip 2” is a play for the 4 man to slip to the basket. 1 will come down the court and will hit 4. 1 will act like he is cutting to the basket but will come back to the ball. 4 will sprint to 1 then will slip to the basket looking for the ball. 5 will pop up to replace 4 to create space. 2 and 3 will continue to space out.

Kevin Stallings Vanderbilt Set Plays: “4 Blob”

“4 BLOB” is a great quicker hitter to put in. It spaces the floor and it has action to take away help side defense. 4 will pop up to the elbow. 1 will pass the ball to 4. 2 will then screen in for 1. 5 will act like he is going to ball screen for 4. 5 and 4’s defender will most likely switch the ball screen. As soon as 5 hears “switch” 5 will slip to the basket.
