Kevin O’Neill Spread Ball Screen Plays from USC

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Kevin O’Neill Spread Ball Screen Plays from USC

Coaches are interesting and competitive people. Being engaging, entertaining, vocal, and quirky can be just a few traits that often can lead to a great and successful coach. The first time I saw Kevin O’Neill, with USC at the time, speak at a Nike clinic, he was hilarious, knowledgeable, and charismatic.

After seeing coach O’Neill speak, I purchased one of his defensive DVD’s and found it to be great material and also highly entertaining. Coach O’Neill has a very interesting career and while he is highly entertaining, he has not always had smooth sailing at his coaching stops. Nonetheless, O’Neill is highly knowledgeable with X’s and O’s and following his speech any coach attending the clinic could give him their card or information on scrap paper and they would be included in his mailings from USC.

I expected a couple things here and there, however, I received several different 8 ½ x 11 envelopes filled with items from the USC playbook. I am excited to start sharing some of these Kevin O’Neill Spread Ball Screen Plays  here.

Kevin O’Neill played basketball at McGill University in Montreal, Canada where he lettered three seasons. O’Neill coached early on at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake, NY and Marycrest College in Davenport, IA where he served as head coach.

While at Marquette, O’Neill was featured in the acclaimed documentary, “Hoop Dreams.” In five seasons as head coach at Marquette, O’Neill led the then Warriors to two 20+ win seasons and reached the Sweet Sixteen in his final season.

O’Neill followed up Marquette by coaching at the University of Tennessee for three seasons without the same success that he saw in Milwaukee.

O’Neill moved on to Northwestern for three seasons, seeing one season above .500. O’Neill served one season as head coach for the Toronto Raptors and also in assistant roles with the Indiana Pacers and Memphis Grizzlies.

O’Neill’s latest stop was a 3 ½ season stop at USC. After seeing early success, O’Neill’s teams were unable to sustain the initial gains and he was let go mid-season in 2013.

O’Neill is currently an on-air analyst for Fox Sports and their basketball coverage.
