I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Kevin Ollie UCONN Double High Zone Quick Hitter by Adam Spinella

Kevin Ollie has a great zone offense set that he uses to get a shooter a quick look against a defense. Whether a 3-2 defense or a 2-3, this play has worked effectively. It is best when both guards can shoot the ball and handle it; that forces the defense to respect them on the perimeter. Here is what Ollie draws up:

The zone quick hitter starts in this formation, with 1 holding the ball by the coaching hash and a shooter on the corner in his side. 5 sets a ball screen on the inside of the top of the zone, getting the perimeter defender with ball responsibilities caught on the wing. That will force x2 to jump towards the ball. 1 then passes to 2 and 5 rolls hard to rim after setting screen, looking to garner attention from both x5 and x3, the middle man and the wing in the zone. As soon as 5 rolls, 3 goes corner-to-corner.

4 then sets a ball screen on the outside of the top of the zone, which again should make x4 show at the ball. By this time, 3 should be unmarked in the corner. x4 is up the line towards the ball, x5 and x3 both are clogging middle, and the perimeter defenders are a step late from the two ball screens.

This zone quick hitter is designed to target the wing defender on the outside of a 2-3 zone, or the low man in the 3-2. If they show to the corner, there should be a drive to the lane for the 2 coming off the second ball screen. If not, the corner is open for a catch-and-shoot three.
