I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Kevin McHale Houston Rockets Offense by Wes Kosel

Here are 3 plays from Coach Kevin McHale. McHale has revived the Rockets, who currently sit in 4th in the Western Conference. McHale won 3 NBA Championships as a player (1981, 1984, 1986), and is trying to bring that winning tradition to Houston. It will be interesting to see how far the Rockets can go in the playoffs.

Kevin McHale Houston Rockets Offense: Short Corner Post

The play sets up with one post man inside. 4 starts at the top of the key, then sets a ball-screen for 1. As 1 attacks, he looks for the shot or to kick out to 2 on the wing. 2 looks for 5 in the post. If 5 isn’t open, he steps out to the short corner. 5 then faces up and can either shoot or drive to the basket. This is usually Dwight Howard and stopping Howard from driving to the basket from the short corner is no easy task. Howard also uses a dribble toward the mid-post then spins to the rim.

Kevin McHale Houston Rockets Offense: Drive & Kick

1 dribbles toward the elbow looking to get a shot. If x2 and x5 help stop the penetration, 1 looks to kick out to 2 or 5 for a shot. If x2 and x5 don’t help, 1 now reads x4 and x3 and makes the appropriate pass or takes the shot.

Kevin McHale Houston Rockets Offense: Roll to Post

5 sets a ball-screen for 1. 1 looks to attack toward the lane, making x5 pay attention to the penetration threat. 4 steps out to the corner and receives the pass from 1. As x5 helps on the ball-screen, 5 cuts hard to the low post and looks for the pass from 4. With x5 helping on the screen, 5 should be able to seal his man for the easy post pass.
