Kawhi Leonard San Antonio Spurs “Shuffle” Set Play
The San Antonio Spurs have enjoyed another successful year and Gregg Popovich has been a pioneer in the enhancement of X’s & O’s. This set is designed to get easy baskets for any player on the court. The first option is designed to get a look for Kawhi Leonard on a lob pass. Tony Parker dribbles up the floor (almost always on the right side) and dribble handoffs to Tim Duncan on the wing. On this handoff, Kawhi Leonard receives a backscreen from the other big man and Duncan looks to get him an easy lob. If that is covered, the next option is to reverse the ball to the other big on the wing and look to pass to Danny Green cutting out. If its a designed call or if Green is overplayed he cuts backdoor for a layup opportunity. The final continuation of this set is for Green to receive the pass on the wing and have Kawhi Leonard set a Shuffle screen for Duncan to cut for a layup or get a post opportunity. The Spurs ran this in their round 1 matchup against the Clippers and got 4 layups out of it, and took advantage of almost every NBA team during the regular season with it as well.
In his fourth NBA season Kawhi Leonard has battled various injuries to put together another solid campaign, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors and further solidifying his place as the new face of the Spurs. Even though the team’s title defense ended in a disappointing first-round exit, the year left little doubt that the future of the Silver and Black is safe in Leonard’s giant mitts.
