Quick Hitters Plays by Mark Chapman

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Johnny Dawkins Stanford Set Plays by Mark Chapman

Coach Dawkins had a solid season with the Stanford Cardinal, falling to the Dayton Flyers in the NCAA tournament. The following are some of the sets that they ran during the tournament. Coach Dawkins used his team’s size to their advantage in the sets that they ran along with their ability to get after the offensive glass.

Johnny Dawkins Stanford Set Plays:   “One”

It attempts to get the ball to a scorer in the post off of a four high set. The use of the point guard to screen for the opposite wing player puts pressure on the defense to guard it correctly so they don’t give up a layup and don’t allow the point guard to get open at the top of the key.

Johnny Dawkins Stanford Set Plays:  Loop

The next set “Loop, again starts in the four high set and uses the point guard with a rub screen on your best post player and finisher. One of the coaching points on the initial exchange is to have the point guard make contact with the defensive player. You don’t want the player guarding your five man to slip down to the post without having to fight through a screen. If the post player isn’t open a reversal and ball screen will leave your best decision maker with multiple options to drive, kick for three, or hit a player on the weak side of the floor.

Johnny Dawkins Stanford Set Plays:  Rub

The last play “Rub, starts with a dribble handoff. Stanford did a great job of getting the ball reversed quickly to the other side of the floor which put pressure on the defense to handle to penetration to the elbow. As the defense worried about the ball attacking the elbow the last passer flared to the corner and that’s where the ball was kicked to for a three.

Coach Dawkins had other sets that I’ll share later but I really enjoyed watching his players execute these plays to take advantage of what the defense was giving them.

*The play names that I used to describe the sets, I made up, and were not used by Coach Dawkins.

We have a new basketball coaching contributor in Mark Chapman He is doing an excellent job in providing basketball coaching clinic notes, basketball drills, and basketball plays.
