2015 Final Four Series

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

John Calipari Kentucky Wildcats Chop Play by Kevin Bruinsma

I have spent the past few days going thru the three 2015 Final Four games looking for the best plays, actions, defenses, individual moves, and strategy by arguably the four best teams in College Basketball. Over the next few weeks will take a look at some of the things the Kentucky Wildcats did in their game against Wisconsin to have success on the offensive end of the floor. The first play will take a look at what is the most popular late game set which is used in the flow of the game (Normally after FT’s when fouling). It is the action that Kansas used when Mario Chalmers hit the three against Memphis to send the National Championship to Overtime in which Kansas wound up winning.

The action is known as, “Chop” and gives multiple options in which a switching or straight up man to man defense will have a difficult time dealing with. You’ll see in the clips provided the two times, the Kentucky Wildcats ran “Chop” they scored on an And 1 and then got fouled and sent to the line in huge situations.

The 1 sprints the ball up the floor and uses a dribble handoff with a wing, the trail post sets a ball screen and rolls into setting a down screen for the 1 who had set the DHO. On the back side a flare screen is set so the wing coming off the handoff has multiple options. In the first video clip Harrison gets all the way to the rim off the hand-off and is able to score while being fouled. In the second clip the ball is entered to the post where the big is fouled and goes to the line to shoot free throws with the Kentucky Wildcats being in the bonus.

This action is so effective in late games even though the majority of teams in the country all have it in their play books. If you don’t have it in yours you should strongly consider adding it for end of the quarter, half, game, or 2 for 1 situations.
