High 2-1-2 Offense – Pop Series by Wes Kosel

Here are 3 plays out of a high 2-1-2 offense using a pop out by the point guard to initiate the play. At Colorado College, we see a lot of this type of offense from our conference opponents in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). It works best for the teams that have an aggressive point guard who is very solid handling the ball and shooters on the perimeter to stretch the defense. The plays work even better if the 5 man is capable of stepping out and shooting an open 3-point shot. To guard against this type of offense, we have to emphasize that our players jump to the ball on passes and not get caught standing around. If you do not have a true post presence, this set allows you to bring your center up to the high post. With our conference being guard-heavy, we see a lot of 2-1-2 and Horns (which also brings the post players up to the high post).

High 2-1-2 Offense – Pop Series – Pop Out Post Cross
1 passes to 2 then cuts down, pops back out, and gets the ball back from 2. 2 moves down to screen for 4. 4 back-cuts and 2 pops out to get the pass from 1. 4 moves across the lane to screen for 5. If 5 isn’t open, 2 looks to pass to 4 cutting off of a down screen from 1.

High 2-1-2 Offense – Pop Series – Pop Out Dribble Push
1 passes to 4 then cuts down, pops back out, and gets the ball back from 4. 1 dribbles towards 4 pushing him to the wing. 3 back-cuts to the other side of the floor off of a screen from 5. 1 reverses the ball to 2 who looks for 3 running the baseline.

High 2-1-2 Offense – Pop Series – Pop Out Post Down Screen
1 passes to 2 then cuts down, pops back out, and gets the ball back from 2. 4 cuts through to the short corner. Once 1 has the ball back he can look to drive middle or pass to 3 cutting off of a screen from 5.
