Gail Goestenkors 2009 Nike Vegas Clinic Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Program Building On & Off the Court
Get the right people on the bus
Read “Good To Great” Offensively,
Decide who we are going to be. Understand what is acceptable. Make a strong statement early in your
career.

For example, you are not going to be late. I left the bus. Stick to your guns!
That way you will not have to fight the same battles.

Set the tone with parents. Tell players their role, tell parents their role. Establish parameters.

Explain roles for your players.

Sit down with every player individually. What is your role. You will start, you play about 30
minutes a game. Or I do not see you getting off the bench unless we are way ahead or way behind.
This is your role right now. Here is what you have to do to change your role.

Type up the role, you’re the greatest bench leader on the team. Greatest cheerleader, greatest
motivator. No 3’s from a person if you tell them that, once the rule is violated, you have
permission to take them out.

Show and tell. Every player is assigned a book to read.
Talk about what you learned from the book and how it will help you. Buddy Program: Pair up players
within your team. The player will help
take responsibility when their buddy needs support.

The buddy system. 2 people. You are always responsible for your buddy. When your buddy is late you
are late. When your buddy comes out of a game, you go say something positive to your buddy.
If you run, your buddy runs.

Scouting | Gail Goestenkors 2009 Nike Vegas Clinic Notes

1) Coaches & players scout opponents

Understanding, Learning the game, working together coaches and players, quizzes of opponents

They must share with the team

They feel vested in your team, in your scouting report

Evaluation

Players evaluate the team, evaluate themselves

Rank your self 1-5, rank every teammate

Holding teammates accountable, not just coaches, players as well.

ON THE COURT | Gail Goestenkors 2009 Nike Vegas Clinic Notes

Set the tone: no shortcuts anywhere in program, springs, weight room, time deadlines….Never allowed
to bend down ever.

What will you accept?

Competition: winners and losers every time, every drill

Select Drill captains, they will select the teams

Everything is timed, everything is short, usually 5 minutes, never more than 15 minutes

Timeouts in practice are timed, just 30 seconds.

Special situation after EVERY single water break in practice.

Before season (create 50 special situations, put them in a bucket, pull out of a hat daily)

DRILLS | Gail Goestenkors 2009 Nike Vegas Clinic Notes

5 MAN BREAK: run transition for 1 min, you must change spots on the floor every trip. 10 makes in
1 minute MUST talk

2 v 2 with 2 coaches: working on strong side denial, one player trying to get open on each wing,
denying wing

teaching point: when ball is on one wing, you must get to help line. IF YOUR HANDS get below your
head, they stop and run
Work hard for deflections, not skip passes allowed

MUST get on floor for ANY lose ball

Offensive rebound allowed, defense has down and back

Extra players wait on the baseline

Coach has extra balls, work on deflections dummy style

When in HELP: call the NAME of the teammate you are helping

2 v 2 Close Out, w/ 2 coaches | Gail Goestenkors 2009 Nike Vegas Clinic Notes

Use before playing teams that shoot 3 well.

Defense starts touching in the paint, MUST close out on release from coach

Return to help when ball goes to other side

Teaching point: We can’t help you on a 3-point shooter, we CAN help if they put it on the floor.

4 on 4 CHANGE | Gail Goestenkors 2009 Nike Vegas Clinic Notes

whistle blow, teams change from offense to defense, MUST guard another player on the floor.

MUST talk, especially on change from offense to defense

Could use this for a 2-2 zone shell also

½ court, or conversion to full

4 v 3

teaching point: MUST cover ball, you can’t go ball to ball on pass. Texas does this in the half
court
Understanding when you are in a disadvantage

Building up to Press & Trap Drills | Gail Goestenkors 2009 Nike Vegas Clinic Notes

Tip Drill

Create a tip drill from behind, did not like her drill

3 Plus 1 Drill | Gail Goestenkors 2009 Nike Vegas Clinic Notes

3 man weave full court, 1 man sprinting all the way to opposite end

When you see it is time for the layup, you throw the ball to the sprinter for the layup

Passer and shooter get on defense, 2 v 2 coming back, 1 on ball, 1 off ball out of bounds.

Pick up at various points on floor based on what you are working on defensively.

TEACHING point: Don’t get beat long

4 v 3, 3 v 4, 4 v 3

coach shoots, 3 off, 4 def, 4 must get defensive rebound convert: 4 vs. 3
convert: 3 vs. 4 Must press in transition

A gunn favorite, : she starts with box out, we start with 4 v 3, forces great communication

Do NOT get beat long
PRESS OFF FT Drill
Press made or missed off free throw, must communicate defensive positions prior to free throw
attempt
5 v 5
General Rules

2 consecutive offensive boards…..defensive team will do something really painful.

2 consecutive turnovers……offensive team will do something really painful

4 minute scrimmage: 2 balls on rack | Gail Goestenkors 2009 Nike Vegas Clinic Notes

If the players on court turn it over twice, they finish the time on the
clock running.
